OVERHEAT Solutions Impress Stakeholders During Second Consultation Workshop

How can innovative technologies help prevent container ship fires and support faster, safer emergency response?

This was the central question discussed during the second OVERHEAT Stakeholders Support Board (SSB) workshop, held on 8 June 2026, where maritime experts, port authorities, industry representatives and emergency management stakeholders had the opportunity to review and assess the project’s latest achievements.

The workshop showcased the results of the five OVERHEAT use cases carried out across Europe, highlighting how the project is combining smart IoT sensors, drones and advanced digital technologies to transform the way maritime fire risks are detected and managed.

Participants were presented with demonstrations and simulations from Italy, Spain, Germany, Poland and France. The activities showed how OVERHEAT solutions can detect fires at a very early stage, provide real-time aerial monitoring through drones, support decision-making during emergencies and create a shared operational picture among vessels, ports and response authorities.

Particular interest was generated by the successful validation of the integrated OVERHEAT ecosystem, including intelligent fire detection sensors, drone-enabled monitoring and the Nav100 digital platform, which enables stakeholders to access the same situational awareness information in real time.

The consultation confirmed the strong relevance of these innovations for the maritime sector. Stakeholders expressed a high level of confidence in the project’s solutions and identified early fire detection as the most valuable benefit delivered by OVERHEAT, followed by faster emergency response and improved coordination among stakeholders.

Participants also recognised the importance of ensuring interoperability with existing maritime systems and highlighted the potential for scaling the solutions to support future operational deployment.

The lively discussion and positive feedback collected during the workshop confirmed that OVERHEAT is addressing a real operational need within the maritime sector. As the project moves towards its final phase, the insights gathered from stakeholders will contribute to strengthening recommendations and supporting the future uptake of the project’s innovative solutions.

The second SSB consultation once again demonstrated the value of collaboration between technology developers, maritime authorities and end users in shaping practical solutions for safer and more resilient maritime operations.
